The Best Time to Start Cycling for Your Long-Term Health Is Now

Every year, I meet people who tell me they’re going to start riding “when they have more time” or “when they’re in better shape.” I understand the instinct. But the research on cycling and long-term health tells a different story: the benefit of starting isn’t something you earn after you’re already fit. It’s front-loaded. The sooner you start, the more decades you have to bank the return.

What the Research Actually Shows

The evidence for cycling’s role in a longer, healthier life keeps getting stronger. An 18-year study of more than 82,000 Scottish adults, published in BMJ Public Health, found that people who commuted by bike had lower all-cause mortality, lower risk of hospitalization, lower cardiovascular disease risk, and lower cancer mortality than people who commuted sedentarily.¹ An earlier study of 263,450 UK commuters found regular cycling cut the risk of death from any cause by 41%, and cut cancer and heart disease incidence by 45% and 46%.² And a landmark Danish cohort study of more than 30,000 adults found that people who did not cycle to work had a 39% higher mortality rate than those who did — a difference that held up even after accounting for how much people exercised in their leisure time.³

The benefits aren’t limited to commuters or people who start young. A recent decade-long study of older adults in Japan found that those who took up cycling later in life — or kept cycling as they aged — had a meaningfully lower risk of needing long-term care or dying prematurely, especially among people who no longer drove.⁴ In other words: it is genuinely not too late. But it is also true that the earlier you start, the longer that protective effect has to compound.

Cardiorespiratory fitness itself may be one of the single strongest predictors we have of how long you’ll live. A study of more than 120,000 adults found that higher fitness was associated with lower risk of death from any cause, with no plateau — the fitter people got, the more their risk kept dropping.⁵ Endurance cycling builds exactly this kind of fitness: a stronger heart, better insulin sensitivity, and a more efficient cardiovascular system.

The brain benefits are just as striking. Aerobic exercise increases blood flow to the brain and stimulates BDNF, a protein that supports neuron growth and resilience. A 44-year Swedish study of women found that those with high cardiovascular fitness in midlife had an 88% lower risk of developing dementia later in life compared to those with only moderate fitness.⁶ That’s not a marginal effect. That’s the kind of number that should change how you think about a Tuesday evening ride.

Cycling Is Also One of the Best Things You Can Do for Your Mental Health

The mental health research is just as compelling as the physical. Regular cycling has been shown to reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression, sharpen cognitive function, and strengthen social connection.⁷ Among forms of exercise, cycling ranks second only to team sports in its measured impact on mental well-being. People who cycle regularly report increased self-confidence, self-esteem, and motivation, along with lower stress.

Context matters, though. Research suggests that leisure cycling done voluntarily, in a positive social setting, produces meaningfully better psychological outcomes than exercise that feels like an obligation or happens in isolation. That distinction is worth sitting with, because it points directly at why supported group rides work so well as a way to build a lasting habit.

Why a Supported Ride Is Such an Effective On-Ramp

Most people don’t lack the desire to be healthier. What they lack is a structure that makes consistency easy. This is where a deadline — a real one, on the calendar, with other people counting on you — changes everything.

Research on charity-event participation has found that these events act as a genuine catalyst for increased physical activity, in part because they fulfill basic psychological needs for competence and connection while tying your effort to something larger than yourself.⁸ Studies on exercise adherence consistently find that having an event to train toward, and training alongside other people, are two of the strongest predictors of whether someone sticks with a new habit.⁹

A meta-analysis of ten studies found that even brief green exercise sessions produced large improvements in self-esteem and mood, with the biggest gains showing up quickly and holding steady across age, gender, and fitness level.¹⁰ Other research points to nature connectedness itself as the mechanism — the more immersed you are in a natural environment, the more that environment reduces stress and restores attention.¹¹

A multi-day supported ride is, in a sense, green exercise at its most concentrated. You’re not squeezing in twenty minutes in a park between meetings. You’re immersed for days at a stretch — riding through changing landscapes, disconnected from your usual routine, alongside other people sharing the same effort and the same views. That immersion is not incidental to the wellness benefit. Research and lived experience both suggest it’s a major part of what makes the benefit so pronounced.
