Grant Guidelines
Are you a participant who wants to suggest a new grantee? Are you a nonprofit that wants to join our Grantee list?
How to Add a New Grantee to Climate Ride
You can partner with Climate Ride as either a Listed or Unlisted grantee. Please read the details below to determine which option is the best fit for your organization.
1. What’s the main requirement to become “Listed”? To become a “Listed Grantee,” your organization must successfully recruit at least two participants to register and fundraise on its behalf in a single season. These two supporters can be on the same event or two different events.
What if only one person registers? That’s great, and your organization will still receive the grant from that individual’s fundraising! However, you will remain in the “Unlisted Grantee” category. The “two participant” requirement is the key to unlocking the full “Listed Grantee” status for the following year.
2. I’m a participant. How do I ride for an org that isn’t on the list?
- Step 1: Register for an event with ‘grantee selection’ (search events here).
- Step 2: Consider setting up a team, so you can recruit more participants. When you get to the nonprofit list, select “Pending Grantee.”
- Step 3: Contact your chosen organization and ask them to complete the Pending Grantee Application Form. This is essential!
- Step 4: Recruit at least one additional participant to ensure your chosen nonprofit is eligible.
3. I’m from a non-profit. What are my steps?
- Step 1: Recruit at least two supporters (board, volunteers, donors, etc.) to register for a Climate Ride event. (Be sure to check out the Green Fondo events – we give 100% of all donations to grantees!
- Step 2: Instruct them to select “Pending Grantee” from the list during registration.
- Step 3: After they have registered, you must fill out the Pending Grantee Application Form.
4. What happens next? Once we have received the organization’s application and we can confirm at least two participants have registered to support it, we will be in touch to finalize the process of becoming a Listed Grantee.
5. Why become a “Listed Grantee”? Being listed means your organization’s name will appear on our website’s Grantee List and in registration for all future grantee-eligible events. This makes it simple for any participant to select you and can help increase your overall grant.
Climate Ride Approves Nonprofit Organizations That:
- Are tax-exempt 501(c)(3) organizations.
- Have a mission that aligns with Climate Ride’s goals in climate, conservation, and active transportation.
- Maintain a strong, positive reputation with donors and volunteers.
- Agree to actively promote the partnership to their network (we provide email templates and social media help!).
- Can demonstrate readiness by having at least two participants prepared to register and fundraise for them.
- (Note on remaining listed: After your first year, you will need to maintain this engagement (typically 2+ participants and a substantive grant) to remain a listed grantee.)
How Climate Ride Benefits Nonprofit Grantees:
- No Cost to You: Grantees do not have to pre-buy spots or pay any fees.
- We Handle All Fundraising Admin: We manage participant fundraising pages, coaching, and cover all donation processing fees.
- Gain New Supporters: As a listed grantee, your organization is visible on our website and in the registration forms for all eligible events, connecting you with new audiences.
- We Run the Events: Climate Ride handles all event logistics, planning, participant support, and insurance from start to finish.
How it works
Organizations are only eligible for a Climate Ride grant if participants select them and raise funds on their behalf. Therefore, preference is given to organizations that set up a team or are nominated by participants.
In order to become a grantee, the organization must commit to doing outreach and engaging supporters to select them as a grantee of any Climate Ride event.
If your organization is interested in becoming a grantee or if you would like to nominate an organization, please read the steps above. Then feel free to contact us.
Since 2008, Climate Ride has granted millions of dollars to more than 380 organizations working on sustainability, bicycle advocacy, conservation, and climate change issues. Those organizations and their grant totals are listed below.
