Itinerary Overview
Itinerary subject to change. Your Ride Guide will include full details.
This is mostly a road ride, but there are segments of rail-trails. Your daily ride can be lengthened or shortened depending on your ride goals!
Day 0
Arrive in Green Bay, Wisconsin
Our ride starts tomorrow, so please arrive in Green Bay today (or you can arrive in the morning tomorrow). Car parking will be available.
Your Ride Guide will have a recommended hotel.
Day 1
Green Bay to Algoma
40 mi, +387 ft , -404 ft
Our ride begins in Green Bay’s city center. We’ll shake off the city legs as we pedal through quiet residential streets and designated bike lanes, getting a feel for this historic Wisconsin hub. The route quickly guides us east, leaving the city behind as we cross over the Fox River and head toward the rolling countryside.
The heart of today’s ride is the celebrated Ahnapee State Trail. This classic rail-trail offers a serene and traffic-free cycling experience. Once we’re on the trail, you’ll immediately notice the change: the path straightens out onto a surface of finely crushed limestone, creating a peaceful “green tunnel” under a canopy of trees. With virtually no elevation change, this is where you can truly settle into a comfortable rhythm. The trail carves a path through the heart of Kewaunee County’s agricultural landscape—past picturesque dairy farms, quiet woodlands, and lush wetlands.
Our route brings us right into the heart of this quintessential Lake Michigan harbor town, Algoma. We’ll cruise past the marina, with its fleet of fishing boats, and catch our first glimpse of Algoma’s iconic red lighthouse standing guard at the edge of the vast blue lake. Tonight, we’ll stay at hotel near the river.
Day 2
Algoma to Ephraim
56 mi, +597 ft · +604 ft (shorter options with shuttle)
Our morning begins by hopping back on the familiar Ahnapee State Trail, this time heading north towards the heart of Door County. You’ll pedal past quiet farms, dense woodlands, and alongside the lazy Ahnapee River.
We’ll pass through Sturgeon Bay and cross its impressive steel bridge, before turning northeast to trace the shoreline of Lake Michigan. This is known as the “wild side” of the peninsula, and you’ll immediately feel the difference. The air is crisp, and the views are of the vast, powerful expanse of the big lake.
Our route follows scenic roads that parallel the coast, taking us past rocky shorelines, dense pine forests, and charming lakeside communities. You’ll pass near natural gems like Whitefish Dunes State Park and Cave Point County Park, famous for their dramatic cliffs and windswept beaches.
For our final leg, we leave the rugged coast of Bailey’s Harbor and turn west, heading inland to cross the peninsula surrouned by the famous cherry and apple orchards that define the interior. We’ll stay two nights in Ephraim.
Day 3
Ephraim to Washington Island and back
57 mi, +1,122 ft, -1,122 ft (shorter options with shuttle)
Today’s journey is an out-and-back adventure to the crown jewel of the peninsula, Washington Island.
Our ride heads north from Ephraim, tracing the scenic coastline through the bustling towns of Sister Bay and Ellison Bay. The route culminates with a descent down the iconic, winding “curvy road” that leads directly to the Northport ferry dock.
Here, we’ll board the ferry with our bikes for a scenic crossing over the historic Death’s Door passage. Once we arrive on Washington Island, we’ll enjoy a peaceful loop on quiet, low-traffic roads. The ride offers a chance to visit unique landmarks like the smooth limestone pebbles of Schoolhouse Beach, the impressive Scandinavian Stavkirke, and beautiful, fragrant lavender farms.
After our island exploration, we simply reverse the journey, enjoying the ferry ride and the beautiful ride back down the peninsula to Ephraim, seeing the stunning coastline from a new perspective. This is a classic Door County day trip you won’t forget!
Day 4
Ephraim to Little Sturgeon via the East Side of Door County
43 mi, +587 ft · +568 ft
Want to ride all the way back to Green Bay ? Try the 82 mile option! +1,004 ft, -994 ft
Our grand finale ride! We’ll journey from the north, down Door County’s rugged eastern coast, with a choice of two fantastic finish lines.
Our final day begins by cutting across the peninsula from Ephraim, riding through quiet orchards before turning south to trace the magnificent Lake Michigan shoreline.
From there, you have two options:
- Standard Finish: A pleasant, shorter ride from Sturgeon Bay to our tour’s conclusion in the quiet waterfront community of Little Sturgeon.
- 82-Mile Epic Finish: For those tackling the full loop, you’ll continue west from Little Sturgeon. Your reward is a beautiful, flat cruise along the shoreline of the bay, bringing you all the way back into Green Bay for a truly triumphant end to our adventure!
We’ll gather at the endpoint in Green Bay and say our goodbyes.
