Everything You Never Knew About Walker Creek Ranch

May 15, 2025

To all the Green Fondo NorCal riders out there…get ready to experience the magic of Walker Creek Ranch! A place where ancient geology, indigenous heritage, and wild stories come together for one unforgettable weekend. As we gather for Green Fondo, we thought we’d take a moment to appreciate the rich history of the land we’ll call home for the weekend. Buckle up for some cool facts that’ll make you see Walker Creek Ranch in a whole new light!

Geologic Scale: The Bay Area’s geology is complex and fascinating. On a hike to Walker Peak, you’ll spot a famous transform fault where two plates meet in Tomales Bay, marking the San Andreas Fault.

Miwok Land: These hills are part of a storied landscape shaped by the Coast Miwok people, who have called this region home for thousands of years. Today, their descendants are recognized as the Federated Indians of Graton Rancheria, who continue to honor and protect their ancestral territory. We owe our gratitude and respect to the Coast Miwok people for their enduring presence and cultural legacy.

Sheep and Cattle Ranching: In the 1800s, this land became ranch land, shaped by herds of sheep and cattle. The family managing the cattle here has been ranching in West Marin since the 1800s.

Synanon Cult: In 1958, Charles Dederich founded a “rehab facility” here that evolved into a utopian community, then a religion, then a cult — one of three historic large compounds in Marin County.

Outdoor School: After Synanon dissolved, the vacant land became an outdoor school in 1990, thanks to the Marin Community Foundation and Marin County Office of Education. It continues to educate kids in the values of science, friendship, and outdoor stewardship.

As we gear up to ride, it’s amazing to think about the history under our wheels. Walker Creek Ranch has seen millions of years of change, generations of connection, and some truly unique stories. Big thanks to Walker Creek Ranch for sharing these insights — check out their website for more cool facts. Let’s soak in the beauty, honor the land, and ride with purpose!
