You’ll have the choice of camping or staying in shared cabins. From there, we’ll spend the next two days pedaling along Maine’s scenic Mid-Coast region on two terrific loops from camp out to the state’s rocky coast on quiet roads, dotted with quaint harbor towns, lighthouses, and wild blueberry patches. On the last day we pedal through classic Maine as we pass through the towns of Brunswick, Bath, Freeport, and Yarmouth, on our way back to Portland, the largest city in Maine, and a bustling port town. There, we’ll celebrate the end of the ride.

If you’re considering doing a Climate Ride, or questioning whether you have the physical ability to do it—I’d say to you, “If I can do it, you can do it.” I’m not a competitive cyclist; I rode on a hybrid bike, not a fancy road bike. You’ll be welcomed, you’ll be encouraged, and you’ll enjoy it. Anyone who’s determined and in reasonable shape can finish this ride.

Climate Ride Maine was a joyous and rewarding experience! After completing the fundraising and the ride, I come back to my community, feeling strong and empowered and happy. I work in the field of bicycle education and advocacy, and it might sound strange to take time off to go on a long bike ride while raising money and bringing attention to organizations that are doing fine work in the areas of sustainability, health, and transportation advocacy, but for me, it was the ideal vacation! I got to be deliriously active (in a good way) every day while contributing to the bigger solutions around climate action, all in the company of some pretty wonderful people.

I’ve had the honor of participating in four Climate Rides so far and the experience gets better and more impactful each time. The ride itself is the gold standard – flawlessly and painstakingly planned – with some of the best views and trails I have ever seen. The fundraising is never as hard and daunting as I think it’s going to be as friends and new friends are eager to support this important cause. But most importantly, it’s about the people I have met – from the stellar and accomplished crew to the riders who are all doing real things to help the planet be a better place. I always come back feeling better about humanity and the world.
