Thru-hiker, Victoria Benson @viben.tor, sets out o Thru-hiker, Victoria Benson @viben.tor, sets out on her Independent Challenge today in which she will be hiking the Pacific Northwest Trail: a 1,200-mile journey from Glacier National Park, MT to Olympic National Park, WA!! We got the chance to chat with her about this challenge before she heads out.

“Nature is not conquerable. You have to let go of any control in order to be out experiencing what nature has to offer.” - Victoria Benson

Victoria has chosen to support @intersectionalenvironmentalist and @glacierconservancy to support through her Independent Challenge!

Human pollution has now reached other planets. NAS Human pollution has now reached other planets. NASA’s Perseverance Mars Rover found garbage from humans. Our impact from waste is out of this world.

The rover launched on July 30, 2020 and landed on Mars’ Jezero Crater on Feb. 18, 2021. Since then, it has been roaming the planet, looking for evidence of past life.

“My team has spotted something unexpected: It’s a piece of a thermal blanket that they think may have come from my descent stage, the rocket-powered jet pack that set me down on landing day back in 2021,” the account tweeted, alongside a photo of the object squeezed within a rock formation on the surface of Mars. (The Twitter account tweeted from the voice of the rover itself.)

“It’s a surprise finding this here,” the Perseverance Twitter account added, noting that the rover’s descent stage crashed about 2 kilometers (1.24 miles) away from this piece of blanket. “Did this piece land here after that, or was it blown here by the wind?” NASA wondered.

We hope that instances like this will cause the engineers to take action when it comes to securing debris. “And although this particular space-littering instance was certainly an accident, leaving human-created junk behind is actually the norm in most instances of space exploration.” - @greenmatters

Canada for the win. 🙌🏼🇨🇦 The USA & its Canada for the win. 🙌🏼🇨🇦 The USA & its national parks need to step up the pace on banning single-use plastics. Canada is showing that it is possible to make this happen sooner rather than later.

The ban will come into effect in December 2022, and the sale of those plastic items will be prohibited as of December 2023, the government said.

For their independent challenge through Climate Ri For their independent challenge through Climate Ride, Ethan Avey (@oldtremaine) and Bobby Nyotta recently visited New Orleans as part of Down by the River with Louisiana Bucket Brigade (LBB) @labuckets.

We had the opportunity to speak with Ethan about his experience with Down by the River in our most recent rider profile. LBB has been granted over $10k since Ethan and Bobby nominated them for our Environmental Justice Action Grants program!!

What our participants have to say

Pure inspiration!

One of my favorite traveling adventures of all time. Great people, incredible scenery and challenging biking. I loved the educational aspects as well. The different speakers and stakeholders: rangers, conservancy, Jeff Mow, Black Feet, etc. I felt like our efforts will make a positive impact with the park. I can’t wait to sign up for another one!

This trip further impressed upon me the importance and power of community, and how vital it is to continue to challenge yourself and to explore the unknown.
