Pre-Ride Package: Taking the Climate Ride Bus from SF to Fortuna, September 20, 2010

A special Climate Ride pre-ride package and bus transfer will be available on Monday, September 20th, from San Francisco to Fortuna. The pre-ride package will be an additional cost of $150, and includes bus transfer for you and your luggage to Fortuna, bike transportation and insurance on a special cargo truck, an exciting stop at the Solar Living Institute in Hopland, CA including a box lunch, welcome reception at the River Lodge, and buffet dinner at the Eel River Brewing Company in Fortuna (beverages not included).

The transfer is a very convenient option because safe, clean and efficient transportation will be provided for you, your luggage, and your bicycle. As a thank you for your fundraising efforts, riders who raise more than $2700 will receive the pre-ride package at no cost.

Reservations for the pre-ride package must be made in advance by contacting Geraldine Carter (geraldine@climateride.org). Payment for the bus transfer can be made by credit card or check.

If you are taking the bus transfer up to Fortuna, we’ll have a single meeting place in San Francisco on the morning of September 20th where all Climate Riders will meet to shuttle up north. We expect that location to be at Kezar Stadium in Golden Gate Park, convenient to MUNI and an easy drop-off location for cars.

Registration will be open when you arrive at Kezar Stadium, so check in with the Climate Ride team to register, finalize any fundraising, get your goodie bag, and drop off your bike. It’s about a 5-hour drive to Fortuna, with a 1.5 hour stop halfway at the Solar Living Institute in Hopland.

Here’s a breakdown of the pre-ride package schedule for Monday, September 20th:

7-9 am Meet for shuttle transfer, registration open – please arrive no later than 8 am
9 am Busses depart
~11:00 am Stop at the Solar Living Institute
~3:30 pm Busses arrive at River Lodge, Fortuna (hotels/campground nearby)
3:30-4:30 pm Check into hotels/campground
4:00-5:30 pm Registration desk at River Lodge (if you haven’t already registered)
6:00-7:15 pm Reception at River Lodge Conference Center
7:30-9:30 pm Welcome Shindig at Eel River Brewing Company

Once the busses arrive at the River Lodge, we’ll unload luggage and you’ll be free to check into your hotel. The bike truck will arrive approximately 1.5 hours after the busses, so most likely bikes will not be available until the morning. We will keep your bikes overnight for you, locked and secured on our bike racks.

Then, you’re invited back to the River Lodge for a Climate Ride-hosted welcome reception overlooking the idyllic Eel River. At sunset, we’ll walk over to the Eel River Brewing Company for a buffet dinner at one of the only certified organic breweries in the nation! Our welcome dinner will take place outside in the largest beer garden in the West! (Beverages not included.) If you aren’t signing up for the pre-ride package, you can still join us for the dinner for $25 per person, but you must make a reservation by emailing Geraldine (geraldine@climateride.org). Friends and family are welcome to the dinner as well at $25 per person.

Many of you are coming from the San Francisco Bay Area. We highly recommend using your local Climate Rider Google Group as a resource for recommended travel options and coordination. (You can join the Climate Rider Google Groups of your choice once you register.)

Getting to Fortuna on Your Own (if you are NOT choosing the Climate Ride pre-ride package & bus transfer from San Francisco):

BUS: The best option is the Climate Ride shuttle (see previous tab). Should you prefer another option, a Greyhound bus is available from San Francisco to Eureka – the bus departs San Francisco at 2:45 pm and arrives in Eureka at 9:30 pm. Costs range from $39 to $55. For more information, please visit www.greyhound.com. You must contact them directly to see if they will allow bike boxes.

AMTRAK: You can take a train to Fortuna on Amtrak for about $80-85, and the journey takes between 7 and 8 hours. From San Francisco, you would take a bus to Emeryville and board the train there. For more information about taking your bike on the train (costs between $5-10 extra), visit this page at Amtrak’s website. For more information and train schedules, visit www.amtrak.com or call 1-800-USA-RAIL (1-800-872-7245).

Many first time riders have big questions about getting their bike to the event. While it may seem complicated, it's not. You have a few options for getting your bike to and from Climate Ride. The best option will depend on your itinerary, timing, and budget. Plan on spending a little time to research which option works best for you. Send us an email if you have questions that are not answered by the info below.

Getting Your Bike to Fortuna:

If you are taking the Climate Ride shuttle bus from San Francisco on 9/20, we'll have a truck that will transport your bike. You won't have to disassemble it. It will simply be loaded onto the truck.  And don't worry, moving blankets will protect it.

· Shipping: If you ship your boxed bike to Eureka or Fortuna you MUST have a receiving address. Your hotel might be willing to accept a package for you, but call ahead to be sure. High Country Shipping is our recommended vendor to handle the shipping of your bike via FedEx, and they can also help you set up boxing and build up for a reasonable rate. Cost depends on your location. For more information, please visit our special Climate Ride page, or call Jay at HCS at 877-231-1363. Alternatively, you could also try calling bike shops in Fortuna such as Sport and Cycle at 707-725-9405.

· Flying with your bike (boxing required) -- If you fly with your bike, all airlines have handling fees for checking bikes, payable at the ticket counter. When making your airline reservations, please check the rate and any restrictions for checking your bike.

· Boxing: Most bike shops offer boxes, but you should reserve one early as they may be in demand. There is usually a small charge of about $10 for the box. If you are boxing your bike in a hard-shell or plastic bike box, please email geraldine@climateride.org to inquire about space for transporting it in the luggage truck. We can carry only a certain number of plastic bike boxes in our luggage truck; if there is space, we will carry it for you. We can transport cardboard bike boxes during Climate Ride for you to re-use at the end.

· Disassembly: If you need to ship your bike, most likely you will need to disassemble it. This means removing the pedals, seat, front and rear wheels, and handlebars, and deflating the tires. Each part should be wrapped separately in bubble wrap. You can do this yourself, have High Country Shipping do it for yourself, or most bike shops will do it for you for a cost of approximately $50. Shipping costs may vary from $50- $100 depending on destination. Compare UPS and FedEx, as charges may vary widely, or coordinate through High Country Shipping.

There are a variety of hotels in San Francisco. For accommodations, check out www.hotels.com; they often have rates well below those quoted on hotels' main websites. Climate Ride will end at New Belgium Brewery’s Tour de Fat Bike Celebration in Golden Gate Park and most hotels are located downtown, so you may have to use public transportation or cabs to get from the trip end to your hotel.
