How do I join Climate Ride 2009?

Go to the Register to Ride link and sign up! This is your chance to join two hundred other Climate Riders who will each fundraise $2400 to ride in Climate Ride 2009. What happens if I don't raise the $2,400 minimum by the September 15th deadline?

First, please feel free to call or email us if you need further advice on how to fundraise successfully. If you are unable to raise the $2,400 fundraising minimum by September 15th, you can self pledge the remainder of the balance. If you continue to fundraise after the event and meet the minimum, you can be reimbursed for your self-pledge, one month after Climate Ride 2009. In order to ride in Climate Ride 2009, we ask that all riders meet the minimum by the deadline.

If my company does gift matching, is there any way I can get that matching amount credited towards my fundraising amount?

As long as the matching gift comes in by September 15th, then yes, it counts toward your goal. Be sure to check how often your company sends out matches— some only do it annually.

How does the online donation software work?

Check out the green box on the homepage of the website. This is the area
where you can find all of the registration and donation related items.

When you register, the online software will lead you to create a personal
webpage that you can use for fundraising. Look at your webpage when you
have registered and it will explain how people can donate (and should help
to answer your questions). When you meet people you can ask them to visit
your webpage to donate (they can use a credit card). Or you can send a
link to your personal webpage in an email and then your friends can click
and donate. The donation software tracks and records all of your
donations.

There is also an "offline" donation form which people can use to send in a
check. While credit cards make it easy for people to donate quickly
online, more money goes to beneficiaries if they write a check (because of
credit card fees and software fees 3-5%). So, if you want to ask people
to write a check, print out a few offline forms. Also, the non-profit
taxpayer ID# is listed on the forms, so that donors can write off their
donation. Checks are made out to Climate Counts and sent to Climate
Ride (address is on the downloadable form).

What's a "Team Donation" versus an "Individual Donation?"

A Team Donation is a donation that is made by an individual, to an entire team. An Individual Donation is made in your name only.

TOP

How do "Team Donations" count toward our team fundraising? (What if some members of a team raise more than the minimum, and some members raise less?)

Start with the Minimum Team Total, which is equal to the number of riders on the team multiplied by $2400. This amount is what team members must meet, collectively. To calculate your Team’s Total, add your Team Donations to the sum of each team member’s fundraising. So as long as your Team’s Total is greater than the Minimum Team Total, ALL team members are considered to have met the minimum, even if some team members have not raised $2400.

Here’s an example: Team Green has 5 members. So their Minimum Team Total is 5 x $2400= $12000. Now say that 2 riders have raised $3000, one has raised $2400, and 2 have raised $1500. They have also raised $1000 in Team Donations. Add it all up: their Team Total is $12,400. ($6000+$2400+$3000+$1000). In this example, all 5 members of Team Green are considered to have met the minimum, even if two members are under the minimum. The important part is that collectively, the team met the Minimum Team Total.

TOP

How do Team Donations get divided among team members?

Team Donations are totalled and divided equally among team members.

TOP

What happens if a team doesn't reach its goal, but several of its members reach their individual minimums? Does no one get to ride?

In this case, any team members who reach the minimum of $2400 get to ride, while those team members who do not meet the minimum of $2400 do NOT get to ride.

TOP

As a team member who has raised more than the minimum, do I need to tell you to spread my donations to my team members who have not yet raised enough?

You are always welcome to communicate with us what is going on with your team’s fundraising. But we will also do it when on September 15th, the fundraising deadline, when we begin to make final plans for the ride’s registration.

Can I order extra jerseys and shorts?

Yes! We put in the order for jerseys on July 26th, so if you want to order additional jerseys (in addition to the one you get for free for successful fundraising), please email geraldine@climateride.org with your size (note W or M). We will order extra jerseys to have on hand; if you register after 7/26, we will try to get you a jersey in your size, but if we don't have extras in your size on registration day, we'll get one to you after the ride. (In 2008, almost everyone got a jersey in the size they wanted.) Jerseys have a relaxed fit but are generally true to size. You can view a sizing chart at Voler.com.

Climate Ride bike shorts will be available as well: if you would like to order a pair, please email geraldine@climateride.org with your size (note W or M).We will post what the jerseys and shorts will look like on August 20th.

You are welcome to create your own jerseys for your own teams, etc. Email geraldine@climateride.org if you need logos.

Should I get my bike tuned before Climate Ride?

YES!! We highly recommend getting your bike tuned up before Climate Ride, especially if it's old and/or your bike mechanic skills are limited. We recommend using your local bike shop (support local retailers!) While we will have mechanics on the ride to help you if something goes wrong, the line is long, and there's nothing worse than seeing your friends peel out of camp while your bike is getting a shifter fixed. You'll have a lot more fun riding a smoothly running bike than standing around in your chammy, waiting. Also, the mechanics asked that you not use them as your free yearly tune-up. It's poor form. Please go support your local bike shop and get your bike tuned pre-ride! We suggest doing this at least two weeks ahead of the ride, in case your bike needs a new part or something that has to get ordered.

Can I offset my CO2 emissions from my travel to and from the ride?

Of course! We encourage Climate Riders to purchase offsets for their travel. Click on the Cool Tags link or the Carbon Travel Calculator link below to get started!

Cool Tags Logo

Clif Bar has hooked up with NativeEnergy to create Cool Tags. They’re renewable wind energy credits that offset CO2 emissions. Each Cool Tag keeps an estimated 300 pounds of carbon dioxide out of the air. (That’s about how much you would generate driving 300 miles in an average car.)

>> Carbon Travel Calculator

Buy a Cool Tag. Stick it in your window.
Do what you can to live a little greener.
We’ll do the same.

Is Climate Ride purchasing carbon offsets?

Most definitely. Many thanks to Clif Bar for purchasing carbon offsets to cover our vehicles that provide support, safety and luggage transport for Climate Ride 2009. Climate Ride is also offsetting all carbon associated with trip development prior to the event.

TOP

When do I need to arrive in NYC?

You will want to arrive on the afternoon or evening of Friday, 9/25, for Climate Ride registration. More specific details are included in the Travel Planner.

TOP

Where do I stay in NYC?

Bike registration and our kick-off event takes place on Friday, September 25th in the early evening. The ride begins in the morning on Saturday, September 26th. If you need a hotel, here are a few links to get you started.

Remember September is a popular month to be in NYC!
www.hotels.com
www.kayak.com
www.ny.com/hotels/budget.html
http://nymag.com/urban/guides/nyonthecheap/travel/hotels.htm (neat link from New York magazine of cool boutique/budget hotels)

If you like hip, Euro-style and affordable, we recommend the Pod Hotel in Midtown. Use www.hotels.com to get the best rates (don’t book directly through the Pod website). They have bunk rooms with shared bath and nice double rooms with private bath. This is where we stay when in NYC!

Another recommendation is the Paramount Hotel in Times Square, considered chic and affordable for NYC. Use www.hotels.com to get best rates.

TOP

When should I plan to depart from DC?

The earliest you would want to depart Washington DC is 7 pm on Wednesday, 9/30, but we highly recommend that you visit with your members of Congress on 10/1. (Many Climate Riders cite this as a highlight of the ride!) More specific details are available in the Travel Planner.

TOP

How do I get myself and my bike to NYC and home from DC?

While it's a lot to think about, it's not as hard as it seems! There are several options including the bus, Amtrak, car sharing, and flying. When you register, we email you a Travel Planner that has more travel details. If you have a specific or pressing question, please email us at info@climateride.org. Your local Climate Rider Google Group will also be a great resource for local travel tips.

Options for your bike include shipping it via UPS or FedEx to your hotel or our preferred bike shop in NY, sending it by train, or checking it as luggage on the plane— to the ride start in NYC and from the end in DC. If you need to have your bike assembled in NYC or disassembled in DC, please email geraldine@climateride.org to reserve a time slot, so we can be prepared for you. If you don't reserve a spot, you might have to wait until the mechanics have free time to help you.

TOP

Can I bring my hard shell bike box?

If you are traveling to NYC with a hard-shell bike case, email geraldine@climateride.org to reserve your space. We will likely have space for a limited number of hard shell bike boxes in the luggage truck. If we do, we'll carry it for you. If we don't, you'll have to ship it forward to DC and meet it there.

TOP

Can I bring my cardboard bike box and re-use it to box my bike at the end of the ride?

Yes. Just collapse so it is flat.

Climate Ride 2009 dates overlap with Yom Kippur?

For those wishing to observe Yom Kippur, but still participate in Climate Ride 2009, please email us for details about an arrangement we are working on with UPenn’s Yom Kippur service.

We are aware that Climate Ride 2009 coincides with Yom Kippur. In no way was our date selection intended to offend or disregard Jewish activists or cyclists. Climate Ride dates are constricted by Senate and Congressional schedules, clement fall weather, and availability at our camping areas. We hope that members of the Jewish faith understand our limited choice and will join us this year or next year when Yom Kippur is 10 days prior to Climate Ride 2010.

TOP

Will there be food for vegetarians and vegans?

If you email us to let us know that you are vegetarian or vegan, than we will do our best to accommodate you. We will ask our caterers to provide a vegetarian and vegan option, but we need to know how many people to make food for, so you have to let us know by 9/1 so we can plan appropriately. We will do the best we can, but it's a good idea to bring a few of your favorite snacks in case something unforeseen happens.

TOP

What kind of support can I expect along the ride?

Your Climate Ride 2009 includes the most experienced and highest quality support staff. All you need to do is ride. We’ll provide plenty of rest stops, snacks, healthy meals, restful camping locations, vehicle support (the “sag” wagon), bike mechanics, luggage transport, and showers. You can also expect an unlimited supply of camaraderie, encouragement and cheer!

TOP

What kind of bicycle do I need?

It’s very important that you have a bicycle that you will be comfortable riding for most of the day- up to six hours in the saddle. Talk to your local bike shop about proper bicycle fitting. Most people choose to ride road bicycles, but hybrid bicycles are fine. You may also ride a mountain bike, but consider putting “slick” tires on your wheels, as wide, knobby tires tend to move slower on paved roads.

TOP

For what am I responsible?

All riders need to bring a bicycle, helmet, tent, sleeping bag, sleeping pad, and a small suitcase or duffle containing clothes, toiletries and anything else necessary for five days on the road. In the Climate Ride 2009 Travel Planner you will find suggestions from the pros on proper clothing, equipment, and packing for the ride. Climate Ride provides breakfast, dinner, and heavy snacks, which includes the cyclist's favorite on-the-road lunch--PB&J. We encourage you to enjoy a sit down lunch or indulge in a daily ice cream cone in the small towns along the way, so bring some extra cash. We'll tell you the good stops each day.

If you need to rent gear, check out GearToGoOutfitters.com.

TOP

Where will we sleep?

We have selected the best camping and hotel locations along the route. Nights 1-3 we camp (there is an option on Night 3 to reserve a bunk bed indoors). On Night 4, the last night, we stay at a retreat center with hotel rooms and cabins. There are HOT SHOWERS available every night! When you arrive at camp, all you have to do is set up your tent and relax. If you would prefer not to camp any of the nights, you will find a list of hotels and B&Bs in Travel Planner 2 that are near the camping locations. If you choose to use any of these indoor accommodations, you will be responsible for making your own reservations, arranging transport to and from the campground, and associated costs. Please email Caeli at caeli@climateride.org for more information.
TOP

Are showers available during the ride?

We have hot showers available every night of the ride!
TOP

What will we do in the evenings after riding all day?

Climate Ride has arranged for renowned authorities to meet us at camp in the evening to enlighten and inspire us about innovative sustainable technologies, climate science, and easy ways to reduce our carbon footprint. So you can kick back, hang out with your new friends and delve into fascinating topics! You receive all of this and a great night’s sleep.
