At Bonterra Organic Vineyards, Dave Koball spearheads influential educational and regulatory initiatives that continue to place Bonterra at the forefront of world’s leading organic wineries.
Dave developed deep expertise in organic viticulture as Bonterra’s Director of Vineyards, a post he held for fifteen years. He said of the experience: “I quickly realized that to farm organically in a sustainable manner I had to change my approach to ‘problems’ that arose in the vineyard and to think more systematically.”
This analytical approach—together with a collaborative mindset—informs every aspect of Dave’s current role. As Director of Research & Education, he partners with regulatory, environmental and agricultural groups to advocate for the establishment of beneficial farming practices and environmental stewardship on behalf of Bonterra and the broader agricultural community. “Growers and regulatory advocates working together can accomplish much more than we could separately,” he said. “Thinking systematically about resource-use issues or watershed concerns, for example, groups can readily identify issues such as system imbalances, and come up with solutions.”
