Bicycle Coalitions Getting Serious About Grants on Climate Ride

Climate Ride will have granted more than $3.1 MILLION by the end of 2015 and bicycle coalitions and active transporation groups are soaring – a whopping 37% of Climate Ride grants will support sustainable transportation, getting people on bikes, and safe routes to school and work. Here’s a look at a few of the bicycle coalitions that have teams on Climate Ride events.

We thank you for your awesomeness.

Los Angeles County Bicycle Coalition (LACBC) works to build a better, more bike-able Los Angeles County. LACBC is the only nonprofit, membership-based organization working exclusively for the millions of bicyclists in Los Angeles County. Through advocacy, education and outreach, LACBC brings together the diverse bicycling community in a united mission to make the entire L.A. region a safe and enjoyable place to ride. Our mission is to build a better, bike-able Los Angeles by improving the bicycle environment and quality of life in Los Angeles County through these strategic goals.

Team Boston Cyclists Union

At the Boston Cyclists Union, we’re helping Bostonians lead healthier and more enjoyable lives by promoting the bicycle. The Union repairs over 1,250 bikes per year at farmers’ markets, educates new riders, and organizes neighborhood residents to voice support for better biking infrastructure and policy. In 2013, the Boston Cyclists Union is supporting plans for new physically separated bike lanes (cycletracks) in Somerville and Boston, pushing for a bike network that would put low-stress bikeways within .5 miles of every doorstep, and working to connect cyclists to each other in every neighborhood in the city.

Team Greater Grand Rapids Bicycle Coalition

We are passionate bicycle advocates who believe a vibrant community depends upon access to safe cycling. As the region’s recognized bicycling advocacy organization, our mission is to transform Greater Grand Rapids into a safe bicycling community and promote the economic, health and environmental benefits of cycling. GGRBC changes the way our community views and plans for cyclists. We offer resources and counsel to improve cycling conditions. Funds raised are for Room to Ride, our campaign for bike lanes on 100 miles of streets in metro Grand Rapids by the end of 2015. Bike lanes benefit all cyclists and are an essential component of a network of bicycle facilities and public transportation that connects neighborhoods to shopping, school, work, parks and points of interest. After two years of intense engagement with local agencies, as of February 2014, 43 miles of bike lanes or sharrows have been put into place.

Team Bike East Bay

Bike East Bay (formerly East Bay Bicycle Coalition) promotes healthy, sustainable communities by making bicycling safe, fun and accessible. Funds raised on the 2015 Climate Ride will go to support our campaigns to win protected bikeway projects throughout Alameda and Contra Costa Counties. Learn more about current campaigns!

Team ITDP (Institute for Transportation & Development Policy)

ITDP promotes environmentally sustainable and socially equitable transportation and urban development solutions in cities worldwide. Working in advocacy and direct technical support, ITDP is able to help cities enact smart and people-centered transport policies and practices that improve conditions for walking, cycling, and public transit. With projects in a dozen countries from Brazil to South Africa, ITDP is at the forefront of efforts to reduce carbon emissions, protect the environment, and improve the quality of urban life.

Team Adventure Cycling

The mission of Adventure Cycling Association is to inspire and empower people to travel by bicycle. We help cyclists explore the landscapes and history of America for fitness, fun, and self-discovery. Climate Ride funds will help support the U.S. Bicycle Route System, a proposed national network of bicycle routes that span multiple states and are of national and regional significance. These routes are nominated for national designation by State Departments of Transportation (DOTs), and designated and cataloged by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO). Since 2005, Adventure Cycling has been the lead nonprofit partner with AASHTO, providing dedicated staff support and raising funds to research, plan, and implement the U.S. Bicycle Route System.

Team T.A. (Transportation Alternatives)

From bike routes and bus lanes to pedestrian crossings and car parking, Transportation Alternatives is fighting for safer, smarter transportation and a healthier city. Funds from Climate Ride support advocacy campaigns for better biking, walking and public transit in New York City.

Team WABA (Washington Area Bicyclist Association)

The mission of the Washington Area Bicyclist Association is to create a healthy, more livable region by promoting bicycling for fun, fitness, and affordable transportation; advocating for better bicycling conditions and transportation choices for a healthier environment, and educating people about safe bicycling. Funds from Climate Ride support WABA’s vision of an integrated transportation system that links transit, trails, bicycling, and walking facilities to connect the places DC residents live, work, and play.

There are many amazing bicycle coalitions and sustainable transportation groups you can support on any Climate Ride event.
