CLIMATE RIDE GRANTS MORE THAN $300,000 TO 25 ORGANIZATIONS
Climate Ride Expands Green Grant Program by 262% over 2010;
New Structure Benefits the Most Influential Environmental and Bicycle-related Nonprofits
MISSOULA, MT - December 19, 2011: Climate Ride, the national bike ride for sustainable solutions, has announced that it will grant $300,031 to 25 nonprofit beneficiary organizations this week. The funds were raised during two cycling events in 2011 - Climate Ride NYC-DC last May and Climate Ride California last October. In all, 217 cyclists pedaled more than 620 miles to raise awareness of sustainability, renewable energy, climate solutions, and bicycle advocacy.
"We're very proud to reach this threshold of $300,000 in grants for the year because it represents a 262% increase over last year's grants, without an increase in staff costs, which means we worked harder and smarter this year," said Caeli Quinn, Co-Founder and Director of Climate Ride. "I think this metric showcases not only how fast the Climate Ride organization is growing, but also demonstrates how important these issues are to Americans. Climate Ride has truly become a hub of the sustainability movement, and our inspiring annual events showcase the bicycle as the focus of a sustainable future."
The grants for 2011 will be awarded to 25 national and local organizations, and range from $1,291 to $34,265. The grant amounts vary because participants are allowed to direct their specific fundraising dollars to a list of pre-approved nonprofits. Earlier this year, Climate Ride announced a significant change to its beneficiary structure, which now allows participants to direct their event fundraising to organizations of their choice, as long as the organization meets the beneficiary requirements set forth by the Climate Ride Board of Directors. The change allowed 25 organizations related to sustainability, renewable energy, climate and bicycle advocacy to receive funding from Climate Ride events in 2011.
"This grant from Climate Ride is welcome news after the recent mixed bag of the COP17 talks in Durban, but more importantly, it's proof that Americans care deeply about these issues," said Phil Aroneanu, U.S. Campaign Director and Co-Founder of 350.org, one of the Climate Ride beneficiaries. "Climate Ride is important because it creates an inspiring community of like-minded people who are passionate about what's happening to the environment. As a Climate Rider myself, I know what it means to put the wheel to the road, and cycle 300 miles for something I'm strongly committed to. Ultimately, this funding from Climate Ride will help 350.org advance our mission of building a global grassroots movement to solve the climate crisis."
Climate Ride added 22 beneficiary organizations in 2011, and expects to add up to 20 more organizations for 2012. Nonprofits that will receive the 2011 grants include: 350.org, Rails-to-Trails Conservancy, Natural Resources Defense Council, San Francisco Bicycle Coalition, Green America, 1% for the Planet, Transportation Alternatives, Washington Area Bicycle Association, Climate Counts, Bike Sonoma, East Bay Bicycle Coalition, Acterra, Solar Living Institute, League of American Bicyclists, Walk San Francisco, Environmental Working Group, Alliance for Climate Education, Climate Protection Campaign, Active Transportation Alliance, International Green Industry Hall of Fame, Sierra Club California, Grist, Alliance for Biking and Walking, Save our Snow, and Renewable Energy Long Island.
"As a new beneficiary of Climate Ride, we're delighted that we participated in this unique, inspiring event, while raising funds to support our programs," said Peter Lehner, Executive Director of Natural Resources Defense Council, another beneficiary organization. "The environmental challenges we face today are enormous, and so are the opportunities to solve them. We've worked for decades to give communities less polluting transportation alternatives, especially biking, that can reduce our dependence on oil while creating more livable spaces. We've recently increased our capacity to work on these issues, and our new partnership with Climate Ride as a beneficiary will help to make us even more effective."
2012 Ride Events
From May 19-23, 2012, Climate Ride returns to the East Coast with its fourth annual Climate Ride NYC-DC 2012 event from the heart of New York City to the steps of the US Capitol in Washington, DC. Registration is open to 150 cyclists who will raise money for the green organization of their choice (pending Climate Ride approval), and then set out on a 5-day, 300-mile journey and ‘green conference on wheels' through four states and the District of Columbia to take their message of a new energy future to Washington.
Then, from September 9-13, 2012, the epic Climate Ride California will return for its third year and will see 150 Climate Riders pedal more than 320 miles in 5 days. The California ride begins under towering redwoods along the Avenue of the Giants in Humboldt Redwoods State Park, before turning west toward the coast for two full days of some of the most scenic cycling in America. CLIMATE RIDE ANNOUNCES PLANS FOR RIDES ON BOTH COASTS IN 2012
In 2012 hundreds of cyclists will set out on two 300-mile, five-day charitable bicycle rides to raise awareness of sustainability and renewable energy
NEW YORK CITY - December 1, 2011: Climate Ride, the national bike ride for sustainable solutions, has announced plans for two events in 2012: Climate Ride NYC-DC from May 19-23, 2012, and Climate Ride California from September 9-13, 2012. Both events will see hundreds of cyclists, or Climate Riders, raising money and awareness for more than 30 nonprofits focused on sustainability, renewable energy, climate, and bicycle advocacy. Climate Ride expects to increase its grants next year from $300,000 in 2011 to more than $375,000 in 2012. Registration is now open for both events at www.climateride.org.
"Climate Ride has become a hub of the sustainability movement, and the premier annual event to showcase bicycles as the focus of a sustainable future," said Caeli Quinn, Co-Founder and Director of Climate Ride. "2012 promises to be especially important because we're bringing our ‘select your favorite beneficiary organization' structure to the East Coast for the first time, so we'll be able to support many more green and bike-related organizations - both locally and nationally. Climate Ride is unique because we provide a platform for these organizations to raise much-needed funds, without having to stage large events themselves."
From May 19-23, 2012, Climate Ride returns to the East Coast with its fourth annual Climate Ride NYC-DC 2012 event from the heart of New York City to the steps of the US Capitol in Washington, DC. "Climate Ride brings together today's top green leaders and everyday people who care about clean energy for five days of inspiration, community and amazing cycling," said Geraldine Carter, Co-Founder and Director of Climate Ride. "Our Climate Riders are an amazing group of people who come together for perhaps the greatest challenge facing humanity: the possibility of run-away climate change on a grand scale that threatens life as we know it. In the face of such dismal predictions, Climate Ride offers hope, community and inspiration because Climate Riders have the opportunity to recharge, connect and bring an optimistic message back to their own communities."
Earlier this year, Climate Ride announced a significant change to its beneficiary structure which now allows participants to direct their event fundraising to organizations of their choice, as long as the organization meets the beneficiary requirements set forth by the Climate Ride Board of Directors. Climate Ride is the first bicycle tour where pedal strokes help raise money and awareness of a future powered by renewable energy, sustainability, and a green economy. Full carbon offsets for the participants, hybrid or high fuel economy support vehicles and zero-waste catering are a few of the innovative measures that Climate Ride has successful implemented. The ride offers people who share a passion for green living and cycling a chance to journey toward making a difference. Each Climate Rider pays a registration fee of $75 and then raises at least $2400 to participate in this 5-day, all-inclusive, fully-supported event. CLIMATE RIDE ANNOUNCES NEW ‘NOMINATE YOUR OWN BENEFICIARY' PROGRAM FOR CALIFORNIA CHARITY RIDE
Participants in Green Bicycle Ride Can Now Direct Their Fundraising Dollars To Nearly Any Green Nonprofit
SAN FRANCISCO, CA - August 4, 2011: Climate Ride has announced a significant change in its beneficiary structure which will now allow participants to direct their event fundraising to organizations of their choice, regardless if they are a current Climate Ride beneficiary or not. The change is effective immediately and will allow more organizations related to sustainability, renewable energy, climate and bicycle advocacy to receive funding from the Climate Ride California event this October 2-6, 2011. Potential beneficiary organizations and participants may contact Climate Ride at info@climateride.org.
"Since 2008, we have always had a formal approval process for organizations to receive grants from Climate Ride events," said Caeli Quinn, Co-Founder and Director of Climate Ride. "Now we've taken an innovative approach to fundraising, and we're allowing participants to suggest new beneficiaries, so essentially nearly any nonprofit related to green issues and bike advocacy can have a team on the ride, and raise money specifically for that organization. It's a really great model because many small organizations don't have the ability to stage a charity event of this size and scope, but now they can still participate and benefit from Climate Ride."
New beneficiary organizations must complete a short application process, be in good financial standing, and have at least one participant signed up for an upcoming Climate Ride event. Currently, nearly 20 organizations are on the beneficiary roster including 350.org, NRDC, Green America, East Bay Bicycle Coalition, Rails-to-Trails Conservancy, Climate Counts, 1% For the Planet, San Francisco Bicycle Coalition, Washington Area Bicyclist Association, and Transportation Alternatives.
The next planned event is Climate Ride California 2011 which will take place October 2-6, 2011, beginning in Fortuna, CA (near Eureka), and finishing in San Francisco. Climate Ride California will see more than 100 cyclists pedaling 320 miles along a portion of the classic Pacific Coast Bike Route. This "green conference on wheels" and fundraiser is designed to raise awareness of sustainability and renewable energy, and has taken place for the past three years from New York City to Washington, DC, and last year in California as well. Registration is currently open for up to 150 cyclists at www.climateride.org.
"This is an innovative way for participants to drive change in their local and global communities," said Geraldine Carter, Co-Founder and Director of Climate Ride. "Participants can now choose which organizations will benefit from their fundraising. When registrants sign up for the event, they can choose one specifically, or any combination of organizations from our list, and their fundraising dollars will be divided among them. It's a very unique way for people to participate in a group event, and yet personalize it to support what's important to them. Practically no other event does that."
Climate Ride is the first bicycle tour where pedal strokes help raise money and awareness of a future powered by renewable energy, sustainability, and a green economy. The ride offers people who share a passion for green living and cycling a chance to journey toward making a difference. Each ‘Climate Rider' pays a registration fee of $75 and then raises at least $2,400 to participate in this 5-day, all-inclusive, fully-supported event.

GREEN LEADERS TO BE FEATURED SPEAKERS ON BRITA CLIMATE RIDE
Bill McKibben, Bracken Hendricks, Eugene Linden, and others to speak during
nation's largest environmental charity bicycle ride - May 13-17, 2011
NEW YORK CITY - April 19, 2011: Brita Climate Ride NYC-DC 2011, to be held May 13-17, will once again feature some of the best and brightest minds working in the areas of sustainability, renewable energy and bicycle advocacy. Climate Ride is known as the ‘green conference on wheels' because participants pedal 60-70 miles during each of the five days of the event, and then attend speaking events each evening along the route.
"Climate Ride is a truly unique charitable cycling event because of our nightly speaker series, which is focused on environmental and bicycle advocacy solutions," said Caeli Quinn, Executive Director and Co-Founder of Climate Ride. "Not only do our participants get to enjoy a scenic bicycle ride through four states from New York City to Capitol Hill in Washington, DC, but they also get to hear important perspectives from respected thought leaders. All of this contributes to an extraordinary event - action, learning and life-changing experiences - all on a gorgeous bike trip."
Michael Lemonick will kick of the series at Princeton University. Lemonick is a renowned journalist from Climate Central who has covered science and the environment for TIME magazine for nearly 21 years. He has written more than 50 cover stories and has also written for Discover, Scientific American, Wired, New Scientist and The Washington Post. He is the author of four books and a cover story for TIME magazine was featured in the anthology "Best American Science and Nature Writing 2007."
Also scheduled to speak on Climate Ride is accomplished journalist, Eugene Linden, whose extraordinary travels inform his latest book, THE RAGGED EDGE OF THE WORLD: Encounters at the Frontier Where Modernity, Wildlands, and Indigenous Peoples Meet. The award-winning author and environmental journalist puts a human face on globalism by examining how various cultures around the world are succumbing to-or resisting-modernity. Linden has written extensively on climate, energy issues, and environmental degradation and the effect on cultures living on the edge.
As Climate Ride continues, the focus turns to bicycle infrastructure and advocacy. Leaders in bike issues from nationally recognized organizations like Transportation Alternatives (NYC), Washington Area Bicycle Association (DC), and Rails-to-Trails Conservancy will discuss the crucial role bicycles play in helping the U.S. decrease its energy independence.
Before the cyclists begin their triumphant en masse ride up Constitution Ave. to the US Capitol on May 17, they will explore the future of sustainability - specifically energy independence and clean energy investment - with Bracken Hendricks, Senior Fellow at the Center for American Progress. Hendricks works at the interface of global warming solutions and economic development. He is a longtime leader in promoting policies that create green jobs, sustainable infrastructure, and investment in cities. Hendricks' credentials put him in a position to offer an insider's perspective - he served as an advisor to the campaign and transition team of President Barack Obama, and was an architect of clean-energy portions of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. He also served in the Clinton administration as special assistant to the Office of Vice President Al Gore.
Also, speaking at the ride's conclusion on Capitol Hill, is Bill McKibben, environmentalist and founder of 350.org. McKibben frequently writes about global warming and alternative energy and advocates for more localized economies. In 2010 The Boston Globe called him "probably the nation's leading environmentalist" and Time magazine described him as "the world's best green journalist." In 2009 he founded the organization 350.org, which coordinated what Foreign Policy magazine called "the largest globally-coordinated rally of any kind," with 5,200 simultaneous demonstrations in 181 countries. The magazine named him to its inaugural list of the 100 most important global thinkers, and MSN named him one of the dozen most influential men of 2009.
Full carbon offsets for the participants, hybrid support vehicles, and low-waste catering are a few of the innovative measures that Climate Ride has successfully implemented. Thanks to Brita, once again the title sponsor, the riders are supplied with Brita filtered water and FilterForGood Nalgene bottles ensuring there are no disposable bottled water containers along the route.
Registration for Brita Climate Ride 2011 NYC-DC and Climate Ride California 2011 (Eureka to San Francisco - Oct 2-6, 2011) is now open at www.climateride.org. Registration includes a personal fundraising web page, training support and access to a nationwide network of Climate Riders and eco-heroes. The ride includes a cycling jersey, accommodations, luggage transfer, road support, meals, bike mechanics, expert guides and the nightly expert speaker series. Each participant pays a registration fee of $75 and then raises at least $2,400 to participate in either ride.

About Brita FilterForGood
Each year, Americans purchase billions of plastic water bottles. Aside from the environmental impact of all that waste, Americans are spending a great deal on bottled water. In 2007, Brita launched the FilterForGood campaign, which encourages people to reduce their bottled water waste by switching to reusable bottles filled with filtered water. Since 2007, more than 212,000 people have taken the pledge to reduce their bottled water waste, keeping an estimated 220 million disposable bottles out of landfills. "For 2011 we're organizing two major events, one on each coast, which will double our fundraising capacity. With these events, we can support even more organizations that are making a big difference in sustainability, renewable energy and the climate crisis. We're also very excited because we're giving participants, or Climate Riders, the option to choose which organization they want to support with their fundraising. This will rally a lot of energetic people to raise awareness for the overall cause, while having the chance to impact projects to which they are most dedicated."
The new 2011 events will raise funds for a collection of hardworking non-profits, including Rails-to-Trails Conservancy (Washington, D.C.), Green America (Washington, D.C.), 1Sky (Washington, D.C.), 350.org (San Francisco, Calif.), 1% For the Planet (Waitsfield, VT. ), Transportation Alternatives (New York, N.Y.), Washington Area Bicyclist Association (Washington, D.C.), San Francisco Bicycle Coalition (San Francisco, Calif.), and Climate Counts (Manchester, N.H.).
"Bikes are about the best symbol we have on this planet," said Bill McKibben of 350.org, one of the new beneficiaries for 2011. "They're universally used by rich and poor around the world, they're a big part of the solution to the climate crisis, and bikes are just plain fun. At 350.org we're fighting to raise awareness and build a global movement around climate change, so there couldn't be a better fit for us than Climate Ride, with its strong sense of hope and possibility."
Full carbon offsets for the participants, hybrid support vehicles, and low-waste catering are a few of the innovative measures that Climate Ride has successful implemented. Thanks to Brita, once again the title sponsor, the riders are supplied with Brita filtered water and limited-edition FilterForGood Nalgene bottles ensuring there are no empty bottled water containers along the route.
"It's encouraging to know that future Climate Ride events will support Transportation Alternatives here in New York City," said Colin Beavan, aka No Impact Man and TransAlt board member. "I participated in the 2009 Climate Ride and it was an amazing adventure filled with inspiration and connection. I'm glad to see Climate Ride is supporting TransAlt's mission of reclaiming our city streets and advocating for bicycling, walking and public transit as the best transportation alternatives."

To Take Place May 13 - 17, 2011
Hundreds of cyclists nationwide will set out on a 300-mile, five-day ride from New York City to Washington D.C. to fight climate change and raise awareness of renewable energy
NEW YORK CITY - October 28, 2010: Climate Ride is returning for its fourth ride this May, with Brita Climate Ride NYC-DC. Registration is now open to 150 cyclists. The five-day, 320-mile cycling fundraising adventure is designed to raise awareness of climate change and renewable energy. The ride will take place from May 13-17, 2011, and will once again showcase bicycling along beautiful country roads from New York City to Washington, DC. Participants can register online at www.climateride.org.
"After the successful ride in California earlier this year, we're shifting to the big chain ring and organizing two rides for 2011 - one on each coast," said Caeli Quinn, Co-Founder and Director of Climate Ride. "With recent environmental disasters and the climate bill stalled on Capitol Hill, we need more Americans directly involved in this conversation. Climate Ride brings together environmental leaders and everyday people who care about clean energy for five days of inspiration, community and amazing cycling. Climate Riders have the opportunity to recharge, connect and bring a green message back to their own communities."
Last month, from September 21-25 2010, during Brita Climate Ride California 2010, more than 100 exuberant cyclists rode from Eureka, Calif. to San Francisco. This was the thrilling end to a 320-mile bike ride that began in the heart of California's Redwood Empire and meandered along the stunning Pacific Coast to the finale in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park. Each night at the campsites, Climate Ride
featured after-dinner lectures from artists, scientists, and activists who share their personal efforts to address climate and energy issues.
Climate Ride is especially unique because of its expert speaker series, says co-founder and director, Geraldine Carter. "This is the first climate conference on wheels. Our riders pedal all day and then have the opportunity to hear from some of the brightest minds in conservation, climate change and renewable energy in the evening. Our riders finish Brita Climate Ride with new understanding of climate issues and are inspired to rally friends and family to help resolve the most important issue facing humanity."
Climate Ride is also the first multi-day, multi-city bicycle tour where pedal strokes help raise money and awareness for a future powered by renewable energy and a green economy. This year's event raised funds for a collection of hardworking non-profits, including Rails-to-Trails Conservancy, Green America, and 1Sky. The ride offers people who share a passion for green living and cycling a chance to journey toward making a difference.
Full carbon offsets for the participants, hybrid support vehicles and zero-waster catering are a few of the innovative measures that Climate Ride has successful implemented. Like the Climate Riders, Brita, once again the title sponsor, is dedicated to making the Earth a greener place. Thanks to Brita, there won't be any empty bottled water containers along the route; the riders are supplied with Brita filtered water in special FilterForGood bike bottles. To learn more about Brita's FilterForGood movement to reduce bottled water waster and inspire other simple changes that are better for the Earth, visit www.filterforgood.com.

We have a unique event planned for this year in California with some notable participants like ocean rower Roz Savage, green business icon Hunter Lovins, and environmental author David Helvarg. Many participants are finding the fundraising requirement to be easier than expected, says co-founder and director Geraldine Carter. "We've found that new participants are skeptical that they can raise the required minimum amount in the current economy, however after they begin using our fundraising software and new interface with Facebook, they discover that their family and friends are happy to support their efforts. We have many riders who have exceeded the minimum already and show no signs of stopping, which is great because a large percentage of these donations go directly to the tangible efforts of our beneficiaries."

BRITA CLIMATE RIDE RETURNS FOR THIRD YEAR; EXPANDS TO CALIFORNIA
3rd Annual Ride and "Climate Conference on Wheels"
To Take Place Sept 21-25, 2010 From Eureka to San Francisco
Hundreds of cyclists from all over the U.S. will set out on a 300-mile, 5-day ride in Northern California to raise awareness of the climate crisis and clean energy
SAN FRANCISCO, CA - March 25, 2010: Brita Climate Ride will return for its third year this September, and registration is now open to 250 cyclists. For 2010, the organization is "going west" to California beginning the ride near Eureka (Fortuna) and ending in San Francisco. This year's event, title-sponsored by Brita, is called Brita Climate Ride California 2010 and will take place September 21-25, 2010. The event will see hundreds of cyclists pedaling more than 300 miles along a portion of the classic Pacific Coast Bike Route. This "climate conference on wheels" and fundraiser is designed to raise awareness of the climate crisis and renewable energy, and has taken place for the past two years from New York City to Washington, DC. Participants can currently register online at www.climateride.org. The original Climate Ride East Coast Classic event will take place again in May 2011.
Caeli Quinn, co-founder and director of Climate Ride, said the ride is a positive way for people to express their concern about the climate crisis. "Climate Ride is an extraordinary way for climate influencers, community connectors, bike advocates, and the general public to mix and mingle while pedaling along the scenic California coast. It's exactly what's needed right now. The climate movement has seen some setbacks in the last year with the so-called ‘climate-gate' and stagnation at the COP15 Climate Conference last year in Copenhagen. Climate Ride galvanizes some of the greatest ‘green' leaders in the country and profoundly inspires people to take action."
Last year, on September 30th, 2009, during Brita Climate Ride 2009, more than 400 exuberant cyclists rode en masse to the U.S. Capitol Building in Washington D.C. The 140 event participants were joined by more than 300 local cyclists for the final leg into Washington to create a greater impact. This was the thrilling end to a 300-mile bike ride that began in the heart of New York City and meandered through beautiful countryside in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Maryland. Each evening, expert speakers met with Climate Riders to discuss the science, policies and issues surrounding climate and energy. Upon the Climate Riders' triumphant arrival in Washington D.C., they had the opportunity to meet personally with their senators and representatives.
This year's event - Brita Climate Ride California 2010 - will raise funds for three hardworking non-profits, Rails-to-Trails Conservancy, Green America, and 1Sky. Climate Ride is the first multi-day, multi-city bicycle ride to address climate change and renewable energy issues. Embassy of Denmark to Sponsor 2nd Annual Climate Ride -- Official Press Release May 28, 2009
Government of Denmark Supports Climate Ride, the 5-day Non-Profit Bike Ride from NYC-DC, to Raise Awareness of Upcoming COP15 Climate Conference.
WASHINGTON D.C. - May 28, 2009: The Climate Ride organization has signed a sponsorship agreement with the Embassy of Denmark to increase support among the American public for the COP15 United Nations Climate Change Conference scheduled for December 7 to 18, 2009 in Copenhagen, Denmark. As part of the sponsorship agreement, the COP 15 Conference will be the "Presenting Sponsor" of the Brita Climate Ride 2009, while Climate Ride will help raise awareness of the upcoming historic international treaty among its participants, sponsors, partners, and the public before and during its annual 'climate conference on wheels' slated for September 26-30, 2009 from New York City to Washington, DC.
"With the COP15 Climate Conference around the corner, we need to see a significant commitment to addressing the threat of climate change and increasing renewable energy options in the U.S.," said Caeli Quinn, Co-Founder and Director of Climate Ride. "This sponsorship will help Brita Climate Ride to grow in the U.S. and to increase public awareness of this historic conference. We're thrilled the government of Denmark has chosen Climate Ride as one of its main vehicles for delivering the message that the United States must be a leader at the COP15. With the Kyoto Protocol expiring in 2012, it's time to step up and set international agreements in place that curb greenhouse gas emissions to stabilize the atmosphere."
The COP15 Conference is the fifteenth Conference of the Parties (COP) under the United Nations Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and will replace the Kyoto Protocol that was drafted in 1997 and is set to expire in 2012. The COP15 conference will take place from December 7-18, 2009 in Copenhagen, Denmark. The COP is the highest body of the UNFCCC and consists of environmental ministers who meet once a year to discuss the convention's developments. Nearly 200 countries are expected to take part in the proceedings, and at least 10,000 people, including observers, industry groups and non-governmental organizations will be in attendance. The goals of the convention are to stabilize the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere at a level that prevents dangerous manmade climate changes, in such a way as to give ecosystems the opportunity to adapt naturally. Food safety must not be compromised and the potential to create sustainable social and economic development must not be endangered.
"The country of Denmark is inviting the world to participate in the global debate that will take place at the COP15," said Torsten Jansen, Minister Counselor for the Embassy of Denmark. "2009 is a crucial year in the international effort to address climate change, and it will culminate at the COP15 where we hope to shape an ambitious and effective international response to the growing threat of too much carbon in the atmosphere. As part of our outreach efforts, we have selected to sponsor the annual Climate Ride event because it is an excellent way to reach thousands, if not millions, of people who might otherwise not know about the importance of the COP15. This is a grassroots effort, which makes it a perfect match for our goal of reaching out to Americans."
Brita Climate Ride is returning for its second year this September, and registration is now open to 250 cyclists. This year's event will take place September 26-30, 2009, and will once again see hundreds of cyclists pedal beautiful country roads from New York City to Washington, DC. Participants can currently register online at www.climateride.org. Last year, on September 24th, 2008, during Brita Climate Ride 2008, more than 100 exuberant cyclists rode en masse to the U.S. Capitol Building in Washington D.C. This was the thrilling end to a 300-mile bike ride that began in the heart of New York City and meandered through beautiful countryside in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Maryland. As part of the sponsorship from the Danish government, three trips to the COP15 conference will be awarded to young climate leaders participating in a Climate Ride funded fellowship program.
The 2009 ride event raises funds for three hardworking non-profits, Rails-to-Trails Conservancy (DC), Clean Air-Cool Planet (Connecticut) and Focus the Nation (Oregon). Brita Climate Ride is the first charity bicycle tour where pedal strokes help raise money and awareness of climate change and hope for a future powered by renewable energy and a green economy. The ride offers people who share a passion for green living and cycling a chance to journey toward making a difference. Like the Climate Riders, Brita, once again the title sponsor, is dedicated to making the Earth a greener place. Thanks to Brita there won't be any empty bottled water containers along the route; the riders are supplied with Brita filtered water in special FilterForGood bike bottles. To learn more about Brita's efforts visit http://www.filterforgood.com. Climate Ride also endeavors to show that the bicycle is the ultimate carbon-free machine and a viable form of transportation. Each Climate Rider fundraises at least $2,400 to participate in Climate Ride 2009.
About Climate Ride
The Climate Ride organization was founded by Caeli Quinn, 33, (Whitefish, MT) and Geraldine Carter, 33, (Missoula, MT) to raise money for innovative organizations that are working to educate Americans about the impacts of climate change and engage them in the possibility of a renewable energy-based economy, and to mobilize politicians to enact meaningful climate change and energy policies. During the first event in 2008, Climate Riders represented 30 states and a variety of cycling abilities from novices to competitive cyclists. For more information, please visit www.climateride.org. REGISTRATION NOW OPEN FOR CLIMATE RIDE 2009 - Official Press Release December 11, 2008
NEWS RELEASE
For Immediate Release
Contact: Caeli Quinn, Co-Director, 406.871.5477, caeli@climateride.org
REGISTRATION NOW OPEN FOR CLIMATE RIDE 2009
2nd Annual Ride and "Climate Conference on Wheels"
To Take Place September 26 - 30, 2009
Hundreds of cyclists from all over the U.S. will set out on a 300-mile, 5-day ride from New York City to Washington D.C. to fight climate change and raise awareness of renewable energy
NEW YORK CITY - December 11, 2008: Registration is now open for the 2nd annual Climate Ride, a "climate conference on wheels" and fundraiser to fight climate change and raise awareness of renewable energy. This year's event will take place September 26-30, 2009, and will once again see hundreds of cyclists ride from New York City to Washington, DC. Participants can currently register online at www.climateride.org.
Caeli Quinn, co-founder and director of Climate Ride, said the ride is a positive way for people to express their concern about climate change. "This has been a remarkable year for the advancement of climate change awareness in the U.S., but we need to see a significant commitment to curbing global warming and increasing renewable energy options," Quinn said. "Not only does Climate Ride show that it is possible to connect two of the greatest cities in the U.S. by bicycle, but we also educate and inspire along the way. Then we exercise one of our most important rights as Americans, to pay a visit to Congress. The hundred or more riders, and the thousands of people who sponsored them, make this journey possible and send a message straight to Washington-that America must take action to arrest climate change and become energy independent."
Highlights from the trip included pedaling across the iconic Delaware River, along rolling hills in Valley Forge National Park, and a scenic day of riding through Amish country.
Each evening, expert speakers met with Climate Riders to discuss the science, policies and issues surrounding climate change and renewable energy. Upon the Climate Riders' triumphant arrival in Washington D.C., they had the opportunity to meet personally with their senators and representatives.
Last year's event raised funds for two hardworking non-profits, Clean Air-Cool Planet (Connecticut) and Focus the Nation (Oregon). This year, Climate Ride will once again benefit these two organizations. Climate Ride is the first group bicycle ride to address climate change and renewable energy issues. Climate Ride also endeavors to show that the bicycle is the ultimate carbon-free machine and a viable form of transportation.
Climate Ride is especially unique because of its expert speaker series, says co-founder and director, Geraldine Carter. "This is the first climate conference on wheels. Our riders pedal all day and then have the opportunity to hear from some the brightest minds in climate change and renewable energy in the evening. Our riders finish Climate Ride with an in-depth understanding of climate issues and are inspired to rally friends and family to help resolve the most important issue facing humanity."
Brita Climate Ride 2008 was the first multi-day bicycle tour where pedal strokes helped raise money and awareness of climate change and hope for a future powered by renewable energy and a green economy. The ride offered people who share a passion for green living and cycling a chance to journey toward making a difference. Like the Climate Riders, Brita, the 2008 title sponsor, is dedicated to taking meaningful action on climate change and making the Earth a greener place. Thanks to Brita, there weren't any empty bottled water containers along the route; the riders were supplied with Brita filtered water in special FilterForGood bike bottles. Each Climate Rider will fundraise at least $2,400 to participate in Climate Ride 2009, with proceeds benefiting Focus the Nation and Clean Air - Cool Planet, non-profit organizations dedicated to educating, engaging and motivating Americans to take action against climate change.
About Climate Ride
Climate Ride was founded by Caeli Quinn, 32, (Whitefish, Mont.) and Geraldine Carter, 33, (Missoula, Mont.) to raise money for innovative organizations that are working to educate Americans about the impacts of climate change and engage them in the possibility of a renewable energy-based economy, and to mobilize politicians to enact meaningful climate change and energy policies. In 2008, they debuted Brita Climate Ride, the first multi-day bike ride to benefit climate change. They developed a roster of expert speakers (including Mike Eckhart, president of the American Council on Renewable Energy; Randy Swisher, executive director of the American Wind Energy Association; Betsy Taylor, president of 1Sky, and Wood Turner, director of Climate Counts), to educate the Climate Riders about climate science, sustainable energy, and the environment. In 2008, Climate Riders represented 30 states and a variety of cycling abilities from novices to competitive cyclists. The youngest Climate Rider was 21 and the oldest was 78.
